This series of blogs is devoted to the recorded performances of the legendary roots musician, songwriter, and bandleader Paul Butterfield. Over the past forty years I have collected all of his commercially released recordings plus many bootleg performances, as well as all his video performances. You can also check out the facebook page at The Complete Paul Butterfield. Sometimes I post rare performances on that page. I can be reached at dghawk2013@gmail.com

I'm going to guess that this was from 5/5/68 when the Butterfield Blues Band, Jefferson Airplane, and Grateful Dead played at the Central Park shell in NYC. This was one of two times that the Dead and Butterfield played at the same venue. the other was 3/22/69 with Jethro Tull also, making a Dead/Butterfield jam unlikely as compared with the free concert in Central Park.
i have this recording as
Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders
The Lion's Share
San Anselmo, CA
January 19, 1972
Ron - absolutely at NYC/CP in May 68...I was there. The venue was announced (at least) the night before at the Fillmore East. When we heard this, a buddy of mine and I decided to stay over and get to CP for the event.
No, this is not the Grateful Dead in 68. The Garcia and Saunders sounds about right - plus John Kahn (on bass) was playing with Garcia and Saunders as well as ended up playing with Butterfield's band shortly thereafter as well.
The Dead's sound was entirely different in 68. Not going to say that it isn't possible that Butterfield took the stage with the Dead in 68, as that is of course still possible too, but this recording is definitely Garcia outside of the Dead. If it were the other way around... then why isn't Bobby playing and there is only one drummer?
(for the record, I taped the Dead and JGB for years so I have a pretty decent ear for eras, line ups, etc)
